PRAY WITHOUT CEASING
by Lemuel Niere
In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 we find what some Bible exegetes (those who interpret and explain the text) call, “the standing orders for the church.”
Sandwiched between “rejoice always,” and “in everything give thanks,” is the command to “pray without ceasing.” This imperative has been perplexing to many. But there is no mistaking the meaning of “without ceasing” which is the Greek word adialeiptos. It means unbroken continuity, without interruption, constantly recurring. How can one pray 24/7 without stopping?
Going through the writings of Ellen White we get a good picture of what it means. Ellen G. White interpreted "praying without ceasing" not as a constant state of formal prayer, but as a continuous spirit of reliance on and communion with God throughout daily life.
We could summarize what she said in this way:
Live in an atmosphere of prayer: It means living in a state of continuous communication with God, allowing prayer to permeate one's thoughts and actions.
Seeking guidance in all things: This involves constantly looking to God for direction and strength in every aspect of life, both big and small.
Maintaining a close relationship with God: It's about fostering a deep, personal connection with God, allowing Him to be a part of every experience and decision.
Faith and reliance on God: "Praying without ceasing" also implies a steadfast faith in God's ability and willingness to hear and answer prayers, and a willingness to trust in His leading, even when facing challenges.
Example from Nehemiah: The example of Nehemiah, who prayed in various situations throughout his day.
Prayer as a channel of communication: Prayer is the means by which individuals can connect with God, receive His guidance, and express their needs and desires.
Strengthening our relationship with God:
By engaging in constant prayer, individuals can strengthen their relationship with God and draw closer to Him
The Scriptures admonish us to “pray without ceasing.” This does not mean that we are to spend all of our time on our knees in formal prayer.
