To Whom Do You Liken Me?

To Whom Do You Liken Me?
  By Pastor Lem Niere

“To whom will you liken Me? Who is My equal,’ says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, and see Who has created these, Who brings out their host by number. He calls them all by name. By the greatness of His might, and because He is strong in power, not one is lacking”  Isaiah 40:6

Sometimes...well, often...we get an overwhelming sense of helplessness. There’s so much injustice in the world, so much hatred, so much impurity and greed. The sin we see at the highest levels of human power can make us feel completely ant-sized. Like there’s no hope.

But there is hope. Not hope in people.

No, we’re part of the problem. Even those of us who truly want to live godly lives are part of the problem. And God says, “Don’t look down there...look up!” “Lift up your eyes on high and see Who created these...”

Look at the moon, the stars, the Milky Way galaxy. Modern technology lets us see further than any generation of humans before us, into the illimitable and measureless reaches of space. God calls each of these stars by name. Each one is part of His magnificent creation. He knows even the ones we can’t see with our most powerful telescope.

Who else can say that? What human—no matter how powerful or influential—can say he or she created anything? Even supernatural beings—angels, demons, the devil—can’t say that.

When we feel utterly overwhelmed by either our own personal problems or chaos on the national scale—look up! Lift up your eyes and remind yourself who your Father is. Who your Savior is. The One who knows the stars by name knows your name, too.

We know from history—including Biblical history—that life has never been and never will be problem-free. Jesus, in fact, promised we would have problems. “But,” He said, “Cheer up! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

“Lift up your eyes on high, and see…”

Look at the stars. Ponder nature and all created things around you—and remember Who your God is.
